The 59-year-old victim was unresponsive when he was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson after his 2003 Ford Escape hit the the front wall and cigarette disposal at the Maple Avenue bank just before 8:30 a.m., Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
Witnesses said the car was parked in front of the bank when it abruptly lurched forward, then reversed back into the spot before a good Samaritan got into the vehicle and put it in park, Metzler said.
"It is believed the operator had a medical episode prior to striking the bank," the sergeant said.
Fair Lawn police, an ambulance from The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and a paramedic team from St. Joe's responded.
The bank had no structural damage due to the crash and remained open for business, Metzler said.
